Essilor® Sun Solution™ x Istituto Europeo di Design: a no ordinary partnership
Essilor® Sun Solution™ recently unveiled its new positioning: “No ordinary sunwear”. A mindset that Essilor® Sun Solution™ is also applying to the process of designing its lenses.
// No Ordinary, a daily attitude
Numerous activities illustrate the “No ordinary” concept in the daily existence of the Essilor® Sun Solution™ teams, such as the collaboration with Peclers Paris, a trend, style and innovation consulting agency. This allowed Essilor® Sun Solution™ to combine its scientific approach to color perception with the analysis of global trends as seen by the stylists and consultants of Peclers. Result: a new collection of solar lenses for spring / summer 2018 in unique colors and designs, bringing together performance and style.
Essilor® Sun Solution™ wanted to go even further by adopting a disruptive approach: putting sun lenses at the center of the creative process and having frames designed based on the E-SUN™ KOLOR UP™ concept.
// E-SUN™ KOLOR UP™ and Istituto Europeo di Design, an alliance between cutting-edge technology and a renowned learning institution
Essilor® Sun Solution™ chose to call upon the creative spirit of the students at Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin. A choice that was not made by accident: this international school, specialized in training for careers in design, fashion and visual communication, has campuses in Madrid, Barcelona and São Paulo, as well as Italy. Milan, Rome, Turin… all hot spots in the world of fashion where this school contributes to its creative influence.
Thus, 13 students in the last year of the school’s Jewelry and Accessory design program were given the challenge of coming up with concepts for sunglass frames, taking inspiration from the E-SUN™ KOLOR UP™ lenses. Its particularity: better perception of colors to go beyond the limits of vision and perception of the world that surrounds us.
// An award ceremony in Paris for the most creative concepts
From September 2016 to February 2017, the students worked on their designs, taking their inspiration from the E-SUN™ KOLOR UP™ technology, but also from nature, the city, fantasy, performance… Projects which largely surpassed the initial expectations of Essilor® Sun Solution™ thanks to their innovation and originality.
In March, three best concepts were selected from multiple projects presented by each student. They will now be featured in a further activity involving students in Graphic Design and Advertising Communication. Due to the quality of the work presented, five additional projects were chosen to receive special mention. Essilor® Sun Solution™ will invite the 3 winning students to receive an official prize during the Silmo tradeshow held in Paris from 6 to 9 October 2017.
To recognize students’ effort and creativity, it was decided to choose 13 other proposals, one from each participant, and let the Internet community choose their favorite. From May to September, Internet users will be able to vote for their preferred project on the Essilor® Sun Solution™ website. A page dedicated to each project provides further details about the student’s approach.
The concept having received the greatest number of votes will receive the “Digital Media Mention” during SILMO. A way for Essilor® Sun Solution™ to further highlight and reward students’ dedication and their hard work.
Through the collaboration with the IED, Essilor® Sun Solution™ wants to explore new possibilities and show that a sun lens of exception can be the source of inspiration for sunglasses. Concept frames created by the students show the broader possibilities of E-SUN™ KOLOR UP™ lenses.
