"It's one of the hardest races in the world. It’s a big, visual, sporting event and a tremendous human feat."

Nicolas Maréchal ran the 2018 Marathon des Sables. Two hundred fifty kilometers through the south Saharan desert, 6 stages (between 30 and 80 km per day) in total autonomy.

Each runner carried a backpack (about 6 kg) containing food rations, clothing, and a sleeping bag. The organization provided a ration of water and a tent to be shared with the other runners at night; no shower, no toilet. And what about the weather? Up to 50°C (122°F) during the day, 5°C (41°F) at night, and even colder in windy conditions.

He was also motivated to run for another good reason: the Cercle des amis cambodgiens, an association which helps people in need, gives them free medical equipment, food and education in Cambodia. Nicolas managed to collect 2 500€ to support this Cambodian project and finished the marathon in 38h48'30''.

He’s truly a no ordinary person!

To face this challenge, Nicolas needed to have the perfect equipment. To protect his eyes in these extreme conditions, he chose Essilor® Sun Solution™ lenses in a Uvex frame designed for extreme sports.
